The Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT) in Auckland is home to a significant aviation collection.
Te Kōtiu is an immersive digital experience in MOTAT’s Aviation Hall. Projected onto aircraft, screens and the floor, Te Kōtiu is a 12-minute symphony of storytelling that screens hourly. The aims were to transform the 4700m² hall into an active space for families, to weave through Māori perspectives and to share inspiring aviation stories.
An idea generated by MOTAT’s exhibition and collection teams, the project was co-developed with Māori advisors, artists and aerospace trailblazers. Visitor insights shaped Te Kōtiu and support came from volunteers and partnership organisations.
The intent with Te Kōtiu was to create a ‘first of its kind’ experience in Aotearoa. With the aspiration to use innovative technology, it was essential to select a digital contractor who could rise to the challenge. The result is an uplifting mix of video, animation, oral storytelling and soundscape, which won the Best Use of Digital – International award at the Museums + Heritage Awards 2024.
Te Kōtiu has increased dwell time and generated deeper engagement with the museum collection. Visitor feedback highlights its success, with comments like, "It opened my mind about the history of flight" and "It felt like I was spoken to personally. "The next phase of the Aviation Hall development is underway, building on lessons from Te Kōtiu.
